Summary : Demands for a neutral language (ie a language free from racism, sexism and other inhumane ideologies) are often met with incomprehension and rejection. Incomprehension, because instead of the social reality, the language has been criticized, with which it is described. Rejection because linguistic criticism is often perceived as speaking ban.
In my talk I will show through an analysis of sexist language above all, that these reactions are based on a misunderstanding of the language and how it works. Words and grammatical structures are no blocks for neutral description of reality, but charged with cultural knowledge symbols that represent reality, not only, but also generate with.
The language we speak today, was for many centuries charged with the world view of a society in which heterosexual, Christian, white men not only the obvious norm, but the case was only imaginary. This world view is deeply embedded and difficult to see in the vocabulary and grammar of the German (and other languages) and it is an unreflective use of language (s) carried on and on.
Since linguistic structures are often very slow and difficult change can be active, equitable language is not feasible without difficulty. But there are a number of measures that have been taken by many people and organizations, at least in the short term there to effect change, where it is possible. Where this is not the case, they can at least create an awareness of the structural problems of our language.
Neutral language can thus help to recognize social injustice and to name.
