TrashCam — tracking the Great Pacific Garbage Patch presented at ToorCamp 2014

by Pierce Nichols,

Summary : In the middle of the northern Pacific, massive amounts of plastic garbage from the surrounding nations collect. They are driven there by the circulating current around the north Pacific. This trash collection represents a serious but poorly understood environmental threat. In this talk, I will talk about my work with Project Kaisei to map the macroscopic trash particles through the use of digital cameras mounted on ships traversing the garbage patch.
