Compressing Strings of the Kernel presented at cloudopen 2014

by Wolfram Sang,

Summary : In the past, there have been experiments to compress the strings within the kernel to reduce run-time memory footprint. However, not much more than concepts and estimations have been done, yet those results were interesting enough to be further researched. This presentation shows the results of my research. It will include topics like how to obtain the strings, comparison of compression techniques, and implementation details under the light of upstream acceptance. Furthermore, results of the data analysis will provide guidelines for developers how to add strings and other kinds of data, in order to reduce memory footprint and bloat, in general.
