Why I Sold Out, Why You Should Too... presented at BSidesDC 2014

by Karlo Arozqueta,

Summary : You love technology, security, and trying new things... You enter the workforce, work hard, rise to the level of a subject matter expert, and you get "rewarded" with management responsibilities. Why? Because traditional corporate structure dictates that those that rise, get promoted, and the only promotion is management. Did you really work hard, stay up late, and learn everything you did only to put it all aside and learn how to approve timesheets?!? Like most of you, I never aspired to have the "M word" in my title, and ran from it every chance I could only to have it catch up with me in the end and accept it as my fate. Then one day, I burned out, quit my job, made some calls, and found myself in the world of sales as a Sales Engineer. Yes ladies and gentlemen, I sold out... But it was the decision that likely saved my life and my relationships. All my life I was raised in the Operations world to think sales was evil, but being in it now, I realize it was the job that my entire life was preparing me for and it's been the best and most fun I've ever had at a job.. Ever.. Come listen to my tales of adventure as a sales engineer, how much money there is out there, how you can make it, what kind of person should consider this career choice and how to make sure you're working with the best sales team possible so you can still use all your technical problem solving skills to make money and stop approving timesheets. Management is not a reward for time served...
