How Film Impacts Hackers: War Games and the CFAA presented at BSidesNova 2019

by Beau Woods,

Summary : President Reagan was distracted in a 1983 nuclear ballistic missile meeting with members of Congress. Abruptly he sidetracked the conversation to describe the plot of War Games and led a discussion on how susceptible America’s nuclear arsenal might be to computer criminals. A Congressional hearing on the recently drafted Computer Fraud and Abuse Act (CFAA) began with a scene from War Games, and in 1986 the bill was passed into law and signed by the President. This session will discuss the impact of films on cyber policy, and specifically the CFAA.
